Associate Scientist/ Scientist - Preclinical
Acuitas is a privately-held biotechnology company, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, focused on the development of lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery systems for nucleic acid therapeutics. Acuitas’ scientists have developed potent and clinically-validated carriers that enable efficient intracellular delivery of mRNA, plasmid, siRNA and antisense oligonucleotides, and have published this work in world-class, peer-reviewed journals. We work with numerous partners to develop new and improved molecular medicines based on our expertise in nanotechnology-based pharmaceutical product development.
Working within the Preclinical Group and reporting to the Sr. Director, Preclinical, the Associate Scientist/Scientist will be responsible for designing and executing studies to characterize the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics/distribution and safety of LNP-nucleic acid formulations, both in vitro and in vivo.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and execute in vitro and in vivo studies to characterize the pharmacodynamic activity, pharmacokinetics/distribution, and safety of LNP-nucleic acid formulations.
- Develop new in vitro and in vivo models and assays to support research objectives.
- Generate study outlines, protocols and reports to support Acuitas and partner studies.
- Document, analyze, and interpret experimental data; generate summaries and make recommendations for follow-up studies.
- Coordinate studies with other Acuitas scientists, collaborators, partners and/or contract laboratories (CRO), as required.
- Generate study budgets and timelines.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of literature and new advances relating to preclinical characterization of LNP formulations of mRNA and nucleic acids.
- Other duties, as assigned.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in pharmacology, biology, toxicology, immunology, biochemistry or a related discipline, with 5+ years of relevant laboratory experience in an academic or industry environment, or a PhD with 2+ years experience.
- In vivo hands-on experience and proficiency in injections (IV, SC, IM), blood and tissue sampling and rodent necropsies.
- Demonstrated proficiency with immunological assays (e.g., flow cytometry, ELISPOT, ELISA, multiplex assays) and molecular assays (e.g., RT-qPCR) would be a significant asset
- Tissue culture experience.
- Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills.
- Presenting data in written reports, and verbally to individuals and groups.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects and studies across multi-functional groups in a fast-paced environment, and to independently execute preclinical evaluations of LNP activity and safety.
- Previous experience or an understanding of LNP-nucleic acid pharmacology and safety issues would be an asset.

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for a range of operational tasks to support day to day activity in the Acuitas laboratories. These tasks may will include shipping LNP formulations to partners and receiving materials from partners and vendors, supplies inventory management, management of external contractors (e.g. for lab renovations, equipment installations or repairs, etc), interaction with facility supervisor, management of waste processes, etc.
Acuitas is seeking a Laboratory Manager to work with all the different functions within the company, reporting to the designated Director. The Laboratory Manager will support research related to the development of mRNA LNP formulations for in vivo and in vitro applications. This will primarily entail management of processes to maintain smooth running of the laboratory but there is also the opportunity to participate directly in research activities. The Laboratory Manager will also manage shipping and receiving for the laboratory as well ordering of supplies and materials to support research activities. Lifting intermediate weights e.g. up to ~30 kg may be required occasionally. The Laboratory Manager is required to keep up to date and accurate records as well as maintain data files.
Working under the direction of the Director and the guidance of R&D Research Scientists, the duties would encompass initial responsibilities shown below.
- Coordination of external contractors and services.
- Receive and manage internal supply of materials required for research activities at Acuitas.
- Final packaging and shipping of LNP formulations for Acuitas partnered activities.
- Laboratory management duties related to operations and maintenance of the R&D group.
- Waste management processes in coordination with facility management.
- Support of research activities for internal and partnered programs using standard in-house procedures.
- Other such scientific and technical tasks consistent with the position and Acuitas’ requirements
A minimum level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline and three (3) years of recent related experience in a research laboratory.
The successful candidate will have excellent attention to detail, the ability to learn new skills and techniques quickly, and be able to work independently. Preferred candidates will have experience working in a chemical or biological laboratory environment. Familiarity with supply chain management, controlled temperature shipping, biosafety/radiosafety/chemical safety compliance, and/or aspects of LNP products would be an asset.

Associate Research Scientist/Research Scientist - Formulations

The Associate Research Scientist/Research Scientist will be responsible for design and execution of studies to develop, formulate, optimize, characterize (physical and chemical) and evaluate lipid nanoparticles, and interpretation/presentation of results.
Acuitas is seeking an Associate Research Scientist/Research Scientist to work in the Formulation Group, reporting to the Associate Director, Formulation Development. The Associate Research Scientist/Research Scientist will perform research related to the development of LNP formulations for nucleic acid delivery for in vivo and in vitro applications. This will include characterization of biophysical attributes, optimization of formulation processes at various scales and contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms of action. In addition, the Associate Research Scientist/Research Scientist is expected to participate with other members of the Formulation Group as well as other members of the company to analyze and interpret data independently and as part of the team. The Associate Research Scientist is required to keep up to date and accurate laboratory notes and data files as well as regularly prepare internal reports of their work. The Associate Research Scientist/Research Scientist is expected to maintain familiarity with the scientific knowledge and advancements within the Company’s strategic sphere.
Working under the direction of the Associate Director, Formulation Development and the guidance of other Formulation Research Scientists, the responsibilities would encompass initial responsibilities shown below.
- Design, development/optimization and formulation of novel LNPs with input from the Associate Director to further improve different aspects of Acuitas’ LNP technology.
- Coordination with the Associate Director to ensure the group will meet internal and partnered objectives and deadlines.
- Database maintenance of past, present and future LNP physical characteristics and respective therapeutic index.
- Production of LNP formulations to support internal and partnered programs using standard in-house processes.
- Characterization of LNP formulations and components using standard in-house assays and development of new assays or detailed investigations of specific LNP attributes as required. This may include hands-on method development and execution or management of external testing facilities for specialized techniques.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of current state of the art in nucleic acid LNP formulation space.
- Management duties related to operations and maintenance of Formulations group.
- Such other scientific and technical tasks consistent with the position and Acuitas’ requirements.
A minimum level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s program in an appropriate discipline plus three (3) years of recent nucleic acid based formulation experience in a research laboratory or a Doctor of Philosophy of Science program with a focus on formulation and in vivo delivery of nucleic acid based payload.
The successful candidate will have excellent bench skills, the ability to master new techniques quickly, and be able to work independently. Preferred candidates will have experience working with lipid nanoparticle formulations including characterization of formulations and raw material components by standard and/or specialized analytical techniques (e.g. absorption and fluorescence spectrometry, chromatographic separations, mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, nmr spectroscopy, etc). Familiarity with statistical design of experiments, data modeling, scale-up process development, and/or regulatory aspects of LNP products would be an asset.
